Report from 5. Jan. 98 (by Bob Ross)Defending champion Ian Renilson of Scotland had his boat holed by an out-of control competitor and crossed the finishing line fourth, in a sinking condition in the opening race of the world championship on Sydney Harbour. He was tussling with Australian Stephen Grimes for second place on the beat to the finish when Grimes, in trying to take Renilson's stern, lost control and tee-boned him. Renilson managed to finish, with a foot-wide hole amidships, before his boat swamped and missed the second race. He has applied to the jury for average points and the Australian Contender builder Mark Phillips, who is competing, believes the boat could be repaired overnight. Italian Andra Bonezzi won both races, in a 15-18 knot southerly that gusted to 20-25 during the second race. The first world championship for the international trapeze-powered singlehander to be conducted in Sydney, home of its designer the late Ben Lexcen, has attracted 65 entries, from Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark and the USA as well as Australia. |

Report from 6. Jan. 98 (by Bob Ross)Italian Andrea Bonezzi, with two more heat winds in shifting light to moderate southerly breezes on Sydney Harbour today [jan 6] has now won all four heats of the 10-heat world championshp for the Contender class. The international jury has awarded defending world champion Ian Renilson of Scotland points equal to a win for race one, when he was holed by an out-of-control competitor while vying with Bonezzi for the lead and average points, based on his placings for the remainder of the series for heat two, which he missed. Sydney Contender builder Mark Phillips, who is competing in the series, and Renilson, worked until midnight Monday to repair Renilson's boat. Today Renilson placed tenth and sixth.
